At Historic Monkey Island, our connection to the Homosassa community runs deep, and the recent renovation project was a true testament to the power of local collaboration. Thanks to the talents and resources of our incredible neighbors, the island has been beautifully restored while honoring its rich history.
The following local vendors and community members played a vital role in bringing the project to life:
Withlacoochee River Electric Co-Op: Installed the utility poles that support the house and barrier, ensuring safety and reliability.
Ed Stokes of Ed’s Creations, LLC: Crafted the boat and Adirondack chairs that now enhance the island's charm.
Scott Schiller of Scott’s Quality Welding, LLC: Designed and fabricated the stunning lighthouse topper, a focal point of the island’s iconic structure.
May Electric Solar: Provided and installed the solar panels that power the island
sustainably.
Wilkes Air Conditioning LLC: Ensured climate control systems met all USDA requirements, providing comfort for our monkeys year-round.
Discover Crystal River (TDC): Provided valuable funding that supported major renovations to Historic Monkey Island in 2023 and 2024, preserving its history and enhancing its facilities for future generations.
Additionally, the base of the original lighthouse, the last remaining structure from the island's early days, was updated with a fresh coat of paint, preserving its historical significance and enhancing its visual appeal.
This renovation would not have been possible without the unwavering support and expertise of our local community. Together, we’ve created a safe and beautiful space where our monkeys can thrive and visitors can continue to experience the magic of Monkey Island.
Thank you, Homosassa, for being an essential part of our story—you’ve made Monkey Island more than an attraction; you’ve made it a community treasure.
